Leonidas of Athens
Leonidas of Athens ( modern Greek Άγιος Λεωνίδας Επίσκοπος Αθηνών ) is a saint and was bishop of Athens . He was born in the second half of the 2nd century and died around 250. He was buried in Athens on the southern bank of the Ilisos . In the fifth century, the Ilisos Basilica was built over his grave . His holiday is April 15th.
Over the centuries he merged with Leonidas of Trizina and was now venerated as a martyr of Corinth. It is reported that Leonidas of Athens was executed and buried together with seven women in 250 during the reign of the Roman emperor Decius in Corinth . In the fifth century, the bones are said to have been transferred to Athens.
