Michael Choniates
Michael Akominatos (* around 1138 in Chonai ; † around 1222 in Keos ), named Choniates after his place of birth , was a Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Athens . He was the older brother of the historian Niketas Choniates .
Born around 1138 in Chonai, the ancient Colossai , Michael received his education in the capital Constantinople . Initially employed by the Patriarch, he became Metropolitan of Athens in 1182. When the Crusaders conquered Constantinople in 1204 and established a Latin hierarchy, Choniates withdrew to the island of Keos, where he died around 1222.
