As Eglisee one was Wiese who Egliseematten , as well as an approximately 33,600 m² large wooded area that Egliseeholz to the northeast of the Swiss city of Basel referred. The Egliseeholz housed a pond , the Egelsee .

Today almost the entire former Eglisee area belongs to the Hirzbrunnen district . This is on the outskirts of Basel, on the border with the agglomeration of Riehen .

The name Eglisee has been used since 1930 for a sports area with a garden pool and artificial ice rink in the middle of the Hirzbrunnen residential area.

history

When the construction of the Badischer Bahnhof on Schwarzwaldallee began in 1906 , the "bathing establishment" on the Riehenteich had to be demolished. In order to be able to provide a replacement for the population, the “Egliseeholz Air and Sun Baths” was opened in 1911. An 80 meter long swimming pool was built. As was customary at the time, bathing should be done separately by gender. Due to the circumstances, this was difficult to achieve. This is how women and men bathing hours were set up. Despite these bathing rules, the bath was very popular and well occupied.

Swimming pool with new diving equipment

From 1930 to 1931 the "Egliseeholz air and sun bath" was converted into a garden pool. About half of the Eglise wood was sacrificed in favor of the pool extension and a sunbathing area. Some of the old trees could be integrated into the design of the facility. The boundary of the garden pool now runs along the Eglisee and Fasanenstrasse, as well as the former Riehenteich and covers an area of approx. 38,000 m². The former entrance building, which is a listed building, was the only one that remained. The existing communal pool was converted, refurbished and structurally and visually shielded from the rest of the area. It is now a women's bathroom. Boys are only tolerated up to their 6th birthday. In addition, the pool was given two 50 meter long pools, one for non-swimmers and one for swimmers. In addition, a jump tower with platforms for 1, 3, 5 and 10 meters jump heights has been built. Platforms 1 and 3 meters were provided with diving boards. The diving pool was 9 meters deep. A grandstand for around 1,000 spectators has been created on the long side of the swimming pool. In 1931 the new garden pool was reopened under the name "Eglisee".

Women's pool (no entry for men over 6 years of age, except for lifeguards)

The swimming clubs repeatedly organized events that were attended by thousands of spectators. Thanks to a sophisticated lighting system, bathing is also possible in the evening hours.

In 1968 the 10 meter diving tower was dismantled, the water depth in the diving pool was reduced from 9 to 6 meters and a new jumping facility with a jumping height of 1, 2 and 3 meters was built.

Artificial ice rink

Those responsible were looking for a way to extend the plant's annual operating times. In 1969 two artificial ice rinks were inaugurated. Since then, an ice rink has been built over each of the two swimming pools during the winter months; one for ice skaters , the other for ice hockey players . Ice hockey tournaments can also be played on the professional playing field. The ice rinks are operated by the “Kunschti Eglisee” association.

Sportbad Eglisee currently

On July 2nd and 3rd, 2011, the anniversary “100 years of Eglisee Gartenbad” was celebrated with a big party. The Sports Office of Basel-Stadt had invited to various attractions - with free admission.

The operating license for the ammonia ice plant built in 1969 expired at the end of 2014. New, stricter environmental requirements cannot be met. The system is in the groundwater protection zone . The Grand Council approved a planning loan. The plan was to purchase new cooling technology for the ice rinks and a balloon hall over the 50-meter swimming pool. In order to reduce the annual, cost-intensive construction and dismantling of the ice rinks above the bathing pool, the ice rink of the swimmer's pool is to be moved to the "summer sunbathing area" in future. The idea is to lay an «energy lawn grid» under the lawn. This consists of a pipe system carrying the medium, which forms the required ice through cooling. The energy generated could be used via a heat pump to heat the bathing water and the balloon hall above the swimmer's pool.

After a renovation phase in summer 2017, the balloon hall went into operation on October 2, 2017. The hall is operated for the city by the Basel Swimming Club. The balloon hall will be open to the public at certain times after the 2017 autumn break.

The Eglisee can be reached by public transport. The BVB operate the stop «Eglisee" with the tram lines 2 and 6. In addition, a here is turning loop (end of line 2) and a parking area. Line 6 has its terminus shortly before the state border with Germany in Riehen "Riehen Grenz".
