Chonai was a Byzantine city in Phrygia . It lies above today's Turkish town of Honaz on the southern edge of the Lycostale .

Presumably in connection with the Arab wars or due to earthquakes, settlements were relocated in the 8th century from the Kolossai located in the plain to the Chonai located 4 km south. Chonai was an important pilgrimage center in Byzantine times with the Church of the Archangel Michael .

The famous Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates and the Metropolitan of Athens Michael Choniates come from Chonai .
