Leptochilus alpestris is a hymenoptera from the family of the wasps (Vespidae).

features

The animals reach a body length of about seven millimeters. The end edge of the second tergite has no elongated pits or rough points, which distinguishes the species from the similar Leptochilus regulus , which has rough longitudinal pits on this end edge. The first two tergites have a white end band.

Occurrence

The species occurs in the Mediterranean area, its northern limit of distribution runs through southwest Germany. It colonizes semi-arid grassland and slopes with shell limestone. The animals fly in one generation from early June to late August. The species is rare in Central Europe and only occurs locally.

Way of life

The nest is created in empty snail shells, especially March snails ( Zebrina detrita ) and those of the Helicella genus . The brood is likely to be supplied with caterpillars from moth (Tortricidae). The adults feed on nectar, in particular on the dye chamomile ( Anthemis tinctoria ).
