The Leptomedusae ( synonyms : Thecata, Thecaphora, Leptothecata) are cnidarians from the class of hydrozoans . All Leptomedusae live in the sea, also on the European coasts. Around 1900 species are counted among them.

features

The polyp stage of animals always lives colonial . A characteristic of the group is that the peridermal envelope not only encompasses the polyp trunk, but also the polyp head (hydrant) and surrounds it with a funnel-shaped hydrotheca. However, this can be so short that the polyp cannot withdraw into it.

The medusa stage of the Leptomedusae has flat screens and often has organs of equilibrium at the velum. The gonads are located on the radial canals.

The Leptomedusae usually have more than four tentacles and never stenotele nettle cells.
