Leroy Haynes (actor)

Leroy Howard Milton Haynes (born January 7, 1914 in Clinton , Kentucky , † April 1986 in Paris , France ) was an American restaurant owner and actor in France.

Life

Haynes moved his family to Chicago as a child; he finished his school career with degrees in arts and sociology. The colored, athletic Haynes played American football and enlisted as a soldier during World War II . After deployments in the Pacific, he went to Europe after the war, where he gave his compatriots football lessons in Germany and France. He found work in a bar in Paris and opened the first American restaurant in France, Gabby and Haynes, with his local wife in 1949 . It developed into a meeting place not only for American soldiers, but also as a hangout for artists. After the divorce in 1960, Haynes had another restaurant, Chez Haynes , built a few doors down , while his former wife continued to run the old one. This too became a popular destination for musicians, writers and actors. Haynes was married two more times.

From 1962 to 1975, Haynes appeared in a number of films and the television series Treasure Island .
