The Tokyo beacon ( Japanese 東京 灯 標 , Tōkyō tōhyō ) is at the entrance to Tokyo Bay . It was in operation from January 1, 1969 to October 1, 2010, when it was shut down.

history

The beacon replaced the since 1947 enshrined there in 1969 Lightship . It should also make navigation easier for ships coming from the Izu Islands . The 150 candela bright white light was visible from 8 nautical miles away. The combination of the 32 m high beacon and the bowl-shaped building standing on a platform led to the nickname Danjo no shimboru ( 男女 の シ ン ボ ル ), "symbol of man and woman".

The beacon of the former lightship is located on the grounds of the " Museum of Maritime Science " ( 船 の 科学館 , Fune no Kagakukan ) in Tokyo Bay .
