The Ulenge lighthouse is a former beacon on the northern coast of Tanzania on the offshore island of Ulenge . It was built at the end of the 19th century in what was then German East Africa to make it easier for shipping to enter the nearby port of Tanga . Until 1929 it was Tanga's only lighthouse. It has been out of service since 2008 and is at risk of vandalism and deterioration.
Not far from the lighthouse was a rest home during the German colonial times .
