from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leudegasius (partly also Leodegar, Leudegarius, Lesio, Leonisius ) was bishop of Mainz at the beginning of the 7th century .

Life

The Latinized name Leudegasius is likely to be of East Germanic origin. He seems to have been a Burgundy . The period of his episcopate can only be roughly classified as around 610.

In the fight between Theuderich II. And Theudebert II. Of 611/12, he went over to Theuderich's side. The Fredegar Chronicle cites the reason for this decision that he thought Theudebert was incapable and longed for Theuderich's efficiency. The author of the Fredegar Chronicle lets him mention a fable to Theuderich II in order to prevent him from completely annihilating Theudebert.

There is no evidence of the time after the civil war and Theuderich's death in 613. Leudegasius did not take part in the synod in Paris in 614 for unclear reasons. He may have lost the Mainz bishopric in connection with the fall of Queen Brunichild .
