Levanzo is the northernmost and smallest of the three Egadi Islands in the Mediterranean off the west coast of Sicily . Politically, Levanzo belongs as a fraction to the municipality of Favignana in the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani .
The island has an area of 5.82 km². The highest point is the Pizzo Monaco with 278 m. Levanzo has 222 inhabitants (2001 census).
The ancient name of the island was Phorbantia, after a species of plant found there. Levanzo was called Buccina under the Romans. The island remained uninhabited for a long time and apparently served as a cattle pasture.
The most famous sight in Levanzo is the Grotta del Genovese with paintings from the 10th millennium BC. Chr.
