Lexicon of the proverbial idioms

The lexicon of proverbial idioms is a lexicon published by Lutz Röhrich (1922–2006) that lists the meaning and development of meanings of proverbs . The first edition came out in 1973 as a two-volume work. The 6th edition (2003) is available in three volumes and has been reprinted several times, including for the scientific book club .

history

The first edition was published in 1973 by Verlag Herder and had five editions within ten years, the contents of which were largely identical. In 2000, as part of the "Digital Library", an electronic edition on CD-ROM was published as volume 42, based on the five-volume edition from 1991. In 2003, the sixth edition was published and the last edition, Lutz Röhrich himself concerned, under the changed title The great lexicon of proverbial idioms . The content of this sixth edition has been significantly expanded and updated and has a volume of three volumes. In addition to the Herder editions, there are numerous licensed editions and several editions of a paperback edition.

The current edition of the lexicon contains around 15,000 headwords, each of which relates to proverbs , sayings or winged words . The keyword elephant as an example contains a good half dozen sub-chapters with titles such as 'Having a memory like an elephant', 'Performing like an elephant in a china shop', 'Convene an elephant round', each of which is explained with its origin / origin and meaning. Since almost all keywords have several sub-items, the number of proverbs etc. dealt with is well above their number and should amount to almost 100,000. Almost all articles are provided with sources, mostly with articles from specialist journals or specialist books, often also with non-German sources, if the proverb has meanings similar to it in other languages.
