Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis

The Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis is a tithing register of the diocese of Breslau from the turn of the 13th to the 14th century in Latin. The document is particularly important for the history of Silesia - thanks to the register, the border of the diocese, which is more precisely outlined, probably reflects the earlier extent of the original Silesia - and as a source, because many Silesian places were mentioned in documents for the first time. That is why the date of publication is often the date when the places were founded.

It was often assumed that the tithe register was created in 1305 during the time of Bishop Heinrich von Würben , which is why many places in Silesia celebrated their 700th anniversary in 2005. Lately it has even been dated to the year 1295, under Johann Muskata , but it is often assumed that the dates from different parts of the diocese were collected over several years.

The register is divided into:

  • Registrum Nissense (with the Principality of Neisse )
  • Registrum Wratislaviense (with the Archdeaconate of Wroclaw)
  • Registrum Wyasdense (with the Archdeacon Ujest)
  • Registrum Legnicense (with the Archdeacon of Liegnitz)
  • Registrum Glogoviense (with the Archdeacon Glogau)

The register was used to organize the financing of the diocese. Not all of the previously mentioned towns were delisted in the tithe register, probably because the old tax liabilities were already recorded elsewhere. For the better established settler villages under German law, the number of hooves was given, the youngest villages were often only inscribed as item in XXX .

In addition, it also shows that German settlers were spread and settled in the easternmost parts of Upper Silesia as early as 1300 as a result of the German Ostsiedlung . This was reflected u. a. in place names with the suffix -dorf or -wald, the distinction between places as theutonicalis and German personal names as part of place names. In addition, it is recorded for some places whether they were founded under German or Polish law ( iure polonico or Ius Ducale ).

With the publication of the tithe register as the 14th part of the Codex diplomaticus Silesiae in 1889, it was made accessible to the general public for the first time.
