LibrePlanet (translated "Free Planet") is a joint project of the Free Software Foundation . Its stated goal is to promote free software around the world through annual international conferences in local communities and organizations.

history

The project was born in 2006 with a gathering of Foundation members and the willingness to organize the whole thing in geographical groups. The first LibrePlanet event was held in 2009, the most recent took place in 2016 from March 19-20.

LibrePlanet conference

The conference is organized annually by the Free Software Foundation in or around Boston . The conference replaces the FSF "Annual Members Meeting" (AMM for short), which took place annually at the same time. Every year there is a new topic and a dedicated website for the conference. Typically, FSF President Richard Stallman and FSF Managing Director John Sullivan as well as numerous members of the free software community also speak at the event. E.g. Edward Snowden spoke at the conference in 2016.
