Liebermannian reaction

The Liebermann reaction is an analytical process in chemistry. The process is named after the German chemist Carl Liebermann (1842–1914). It serves as a detection reaction for phenols and phenol derivatives which, with nitrous acid, give characteristic colorations (e.g. brown, green or blue). Presumably indophenol dyes are formed in the process. The Liebermann reaction can also be used to detect aromatic nitroso compounds. When heated, these react with phenol and concentrated sulfuric acid . If the reaction mixture is poured into water and an alkaline pH value is set with sodium hydroxide solution , a deep blue color appears.
