Senza ripieno

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Senza ripieno , Senza ripieni or senza rip. Means in the music-making practice of the 17th / 18th. Century that temporarily only part of the entire ensemble should make music. This is canceled out by the instructions Ripieno , con ripieni , rip. Which mean the same as the more modern tutti .

Around 1700 the transition between solo and choral scoring of musical voices was still fluid, vocal voices in the choir were often reinforced by instruments, and amateurs often made music together with virtuosos , so that not all passages could be mastered by all ensemble members. Therefore, with the addition senza ripieno, it could be signaled that only a small ensemble, which could not be supplemented at will, should make music, as in Bach's Concerto A Due Harpsichord Senza Ripieno , BWV 1061a.

Senza ripieno as a performance instruction within a musical work can require several gradations between solo and tutti , depending on the context . It can mean that only the choir should sing without amplifying instruments (as in the fugue of Bach's cantata Gott ist mein König, BWV 71 ), or only the solo voices without the (vocal or instrumental) choir, as is often the case in the concerto grosso is the case ( Concertino ).

Sometimes a solo accompaniment of the soloists is also meant, because a continuo group always plays along. For this reason there is a basso concertante (senza ripieno) with one or a few bass instruments and a basso ripieno in full instrumentation for the figured bass .
