The Church of Our Lady (also Marienkirche or Niederkirche , Polish Kościół Marii Panny ) is an Evangelical Lutheran church building in the Lower Silesian town of Legnica (German Liegnitz). It is the oldest parish church in the city.

history

prehistory

The origins of the church go back to the second half of the 12th century. Around 1170, Duke Boleslaw I had a small, single-nave, wooden church built near his castle. In 1192 a new Romanesque building was made of sandstone. The church was first mentioned in 1195 in a letter from the Leubus Monastery . This building was a Romanesque, single-nave church with a short presbytery and a semicircular apse.

Today's construction

The church was completely destroyed in the great city fire in 1338. A new building took place between 1362 and 1386, whereby the foundation walls of the previous building were included. A three-aisled church was built. Numerous additions were made in the following centuries. Between 1450 and 1468 the choir was expanded. In 1484 the south tower was completed.

In 1522 the first Protestant sermon in the Liegnitz city area was held in the church.

In the middle of the 17th century the church was renovated and expanded. As a result of a lightning strike, the church burned down completely on March 11, 1822. The reconstruction took place between 1824 and 1829. The church was converted into a hall church and the interior was restored in the neo-Gothic style. The two towers were added to the west facade.

In 1903 a report was made about structural damage to the church. These provided the occasion for a large-scale renovation and redesign. From 1905 the interior was redesigned with geometric Mauritanian patterns based on a design by Professor Detkana from Berlin. The towers were renovated, the church received a new roof and a chapel was added to the south facade. The redesigned church was consecrated on May 31, 1906.

After the Second World War, a German Protestant minority remained in the city, which was allowed to continue to use the Liebfrauenkirche. It passed from the church province of Silesia of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union to the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland . German church services were also held here under Pastor Wolfgang Meißler. This came to an end in 1962 after Pastor Meißler was deported to West Germany. Funds for renovating and maintaining the church could be collected through the foundation “Silesian Aid PWM” he founded. In 2009, the square in front of the Liebfrauenkirche was named after Pastor Meißler, Plac Pastora-Wolfganga-Maxa-Meißlera .
