The Liebfrauenkirche in Lienzingen is a former pilgrimage church. It stands on the southern outskirts of Lienzingen (today to Mühlacker ) on a small hill and is visible from afar.

history

Between 1476 and 1482, the abbot of Maulbronn Monastery , Johann Riescher von Ladenburg, had the late Gothic St. Mary's pilgrimage church built. The short construction time suggests that the building was the result of the extension or conversion of a previous church. The altars of the church were destroyed during the Palatine War of Succession in 1693 and in the First Coalition War in 1796.

After a lightning strike, the roof turret was replaced in 1930 , the interior was then restored in 1937 and 1938.

The church is in communal ownership and therefore belongs to the city of Mühlacker today.

Building description

Interior view

You can already see a clear difference from the outside: the western part of the building has a deep-drawn roof and only a few small windows, while the eastern part has five large Gothic windows with buttresses arranged between them . As a result, the roof extension is correspondingly higher here. On the roof of the eastern part there is a slim roof turret .

The division, which can already be recognized from the outside, continues inside the church. The church interior is only weakly lit by four small windows. It is spanned by a wooden barrel vault. In contrast to this is the light choir.

Choir

The choir is two steps above the level of the church interior. It is illuminated by five large windows that lead to the ornate mesh vault with which it ends. The mesh vault connects eight buttresses. Six keystones with motifs are placed at the intersection of the vault. In the far east, i.e. directly in front of the choir windows, Mary, the patroness of the church, is depicted. There are three coats of arms in their vicinity, the middle coat of arms establishing the connection to Maulbronn Monastery.

Also noteworthy is the entrance to the sacristy in the south wall of the choir. The keel spanned gate with it durchschneidendem girder is sealed from the old gothic door. This is decorated with red-painted fittings made of ribbons with tracery rosettes, lilies and holly leaves.

Prayer on the wooden ceiling

In contrast to the vault of the choir, there is the rather simple wooden barrel vault of the church interior. This is decorated with all kinds of paintings, which show tendrils, garlands, a fool's head, flower formations and dragons. A six-part prayer in Gothic minuscule script can be seen on an indicated tape . This is attached centrally in the horizontal middle section.

In the south wall of the church there is a sedalia house from 1482. This used to be used to store the consecrated hosts. Next to it is the portrait of Mary "Mary on the crescent moon". This mural was only uncovered and restored towards the end of the 19th century. The stone pulpit, also on the south wall, has some remarkable details such as the fish bubble pattern on the railing.

use

The church is used for concerts in the summer as part of the “Musical Summer” event. In addition, the Lienzingen sub-community of the Catholic Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde Mühlacker uses the church for services. It is used for the funeral service at funerals in the Lienzingen cemetery. Outside of these events, the church is usually not accessible.
