history

Lietūkis was founded after a restructuring of the Lietuvos žemės ūkio draugija (Association for Agriculture of Lithuania), founded in Kaunas in 1921, with start-up capital of 14,300 Litas . With the support of the government, Lietūkis became the largest association of cooperatives. In 1927 he founded the Central Union of the Lithuanian Dairy Companies Pienocentras .

As a result of competition with other cooperatives, the number of members fell from 71 to 41 between 1927 and 1931. The number of members increased to 114 in 1932 and to 145 in 1940. In 1937, goods worth 73 million litas were sold, including grain and seeds for 6 million litas and fertilizer worth 10 million litas. In 1939 the turnover was 139 million litas and the capital was 10,603,000 litas; Lietukis exports at that time made up about 15% of total Lithuanian exports.

In 1940, the Soviet government founded the Lietuvos vartotojų kooperatyvų sąjunga (German: Lithuanian Union of Consumer Cooperatives) in place of Lietūkis. It is now registered as Lietuvos kooperatyvų sąjunga .
