Ligaments of the ankle

The anterior tibiofibular ligament (Latin for 'anterior shin-fibula ligament') is a ligament of the ankle . Together with the posterior tibiofibular ligament ( ligamentum tibiofibulare posterius ) and the lower tibiofibular ligament ( ligamentum tibiofibulare inferius ) it forms the distal syndesmosis . The anterior tibiofibular ligament is a flat ligament that runs from the lower end of the tibia to the lower end of the fibula . The tendon of the extensor digitorum longus muscle is adjacent to it .

The anterior tibiofibular ligament is by far the most frequently injured ligament of the ankle.
