Ligaments of the ankle

The posterior tibiofibular ligament (Latin for 'posterior tibia-fibula ligament') is a ligament of the ankle joint . Together with the anterior tibiofibular ligament ( Ligamentum tibiofibulare anterius ) and the lower tibiofibular ligament ( Ligamentum tibiofibulare inferius ) it forms the distal syndesmosis . The posterior tibiofibular ligament is a flat ligament that runs from the lower end of the tibia to the lower end of the fibula . The tendons of the flexor hallucis longus muscle and the peroneus longus muscle are adjacent to it .

In the normal and flexed position, the ligament can hardly be demarcated in the imaging from the inferior tibiofibular ligament , but in the dorsiflexion of the ankle both ligaments can be clearly distinguished.
