Ligaments of the ankle

The inferior tibiofibular ligament (Latin for 'lower tibia-fibula ligament') is a ligament of the ankle . Together with the anterior tibiofibular ligament ( Ligamentum tibiofibulare anterius ) and the posterior tibiofibular ligament ( Ligamentum tibiofibulare posterius ) it forms the distal syndesmosis of the two lower leg bones. The posterior tibiofibular ligament runs from the lower end of the tibia to the lower end of the fibula . It lies under the posterior tibial-fibula ligament and forms a lip-like border of the dorsal edge of the horizontal articular surface of the tibia (so-called tibial pavement ).

In the normal and flexed position, the ligament can hardly be demarcated from the posterior tibiofibular ligament on the image , whereas the two ligaments can be clearly distinguished in the dorsiflexion of the ankle.
