Lightning is a free calendar - Software that as a subproject of Mozilla Calendar began, devoted to the development of an information-personnel managers employed software. Lightning thus competed with Microsoft Outlook, the leader in this area . Since 2015, Lightning is no longer an independent application, but is fully integrated as an add-on in Mozilla Thunderbird .

Technical details

In contrast to the Mozilla Sunbird , which has not been further developed in the meantime , which was also part of the Mozilla Calendar project, Lightning was never intended as a stand-alone software, but always aimed to improve the integration of a calendar function into the Thunderbird e-mail program .

Lightning and Sunbird differ slightly in their functionality. Within Lightning it is also possible to receive and send appointment invitations by email. Furthermore, birthday dates can be displayed in Lightning with the help of the ThunderBirthDay extension from the Thunderbird address book. Both programs use a common source code base, whereby in Sunbird adjustments to the independent operation are necessary.

"Lightning" is a working title and not an official product name. Therefore the term “Mozilla Lightning” is incorrect. Lightning is automatically activated after every installation and every update of Thunderbird, but like any other add-on can be switched off manually by the user. The software supports 32- and 64-bit architectures for EComStation , Windows , macOS and Linux .

history

The first known pre-release version - version 0.1 - was released on March 14, 2006. Version 0.9 was released on September 23, 2008, with which the optics were improved and the memory consumption was reduced.

On January 12, 2010 the first beta version of the future version 1.0 was published. Support for register navigation was added and the calendar expanded so that it can now be seamlessly integrated into the user interface of Thunderbird version 3.0 and can also be loaded into SeaMonkey version 2.0. In addition, the support of the calendar standard CalDAV and the interoperability with CalDAV servers have been improved. On July 29, 2011, the fifth beta version was released, which can be installed from Thunderbird 3.0. On September 26, 2011, beta version 7 became compatible with Thunderbird 7.

Version 1.0 was released on November 7, 2011. This now works completely locally - even without an internet connection (in offline mode ). In addition, its user interface has been redesigned. With the version of Mozilla Thunderbird 38.0.1 from June 11, 2015, Lightning is fully integrated into this program.

The Thunderbird versions 68.0 and 68.1, which do not support Lightning, are noteworthy in 2019. Lightning users will probably be able to access the current Thunderbird version again with a two-month delay.
