Lightning Bolt is an avant-garde noise band from Providence , Rhode Island in the USA .
history
The group was founded in 1994 by Brian Chippendale (drums) and Brian Gibson (bass). Hisham Bharoocha (guitar, vocals), who later played with Black Dice , joined them after the first appearances. Brian Chippendale took over the vocal part after Bharoocha left the group in 1996. Brian Chippendale is a co-founder of Fort Thunder, an abandoned department store that was home to large numbers of local artists in the early 1990s. Besides the Talking Heads group , Lightning Bolt is probably the most famous group from Rhode Island.
Brian Chippendale is active alongside Lightning Bolt in the band Mindflayer . He also runs a solo project under the name Black Pus . Chippendale is also a prolific comic artist with numerous publications, such as Maggots and If'n'Oof .
Brian Gibson is active in addition to his musical career in the band as a developer of computer games.
style
The band's sound is influenced by Japanese noise rock bands such as Boredoms or The Ruins , Sun Ra is also mentioned as an influence. The sound of the band is very independent and significant due to a variety of distortions. Drummer Brian Chippendale, for example, plays his instrument very quickly. He therefore sticks his vocal microphone in his mouth when performing; the resulting micro signal is then sent through several effects units. Brian Gibson's instrument is a normal electric bass, but it's tuned like a classic cello. In addition, instead of one of the four bass strings, a banjo string is pulled up. Other effects devices also ensure a concise sound here. Despite the seemingly simple combination of bass and drums, the two musicians create a groundbreaking sound spectrum.
Typically, the band does not appear on stage , but in the middle of the audience. Together with the demanding sound, this leads to a very intense live experience.
