Lilla Karlsö ( Swedish : Kleine Karlsinsel ) is a Swedish island just under three kilometers off the west coast of Gotland . The island is an uninhabited nature reserve , which at 1.3 km² is slightly smaller than the sister island Stora Karlsö , but is slightly higher at 66 m above sea level. The reserve is part of the European Natura 2000 network . In the summer season it can be reached by boat from Djupvik.
In a circular walk lasting several hours, visitors, mostly by trained ornithologists, are guided across the island. On the wooded southern cliffs, a small ship settlement from the Bronze or Iron Age reveals that the island was not always deserted. The western cliff has deep caves , which are now 25 m or 35 m above sea level. They were washed out of the limestone 5,000-10,000 years ago and lifted by the post-glacial uplift . At one point there is an imposing Rauk . On the north coast there are viewpoints from which the razorbill and guillemot colonies can be observed on the cliffs . 200 sheep are kept on the treeless plateau of the Alvar with its extensive orchid fields. In these gray or black woolly animals of an ancient race that was threatened with extinction, the mother and young animals also have horns.
The island with its sheep is described in the 13th chapter of the novel The wonderful journey of the little Nils Holgersson with the wild geese by Selma Lagerlöf .
