The Limmatschwimmen is a major annual popular sport event in Zurich (Switzerland). The participants swim in the Limmat through downtown Zurich, which is otherwise forbidden.

history

Limmat swimming was first carried out in 1945 by the Zürileu swimming club , at that time as a club competition. The event was later expanded to include a popular sporting event: "Everyone in Zurich should have swum the Limmat once in a lifetime " is the motto. Generations of citizens followed this call. In 2013 the 50th Limmat Swimming took place; 4200 swimmers took part. No swimming was organized in the 1950s or around 1980. In 2005 the event had to be canceled for the first time due to bad weather. Since then, several events have not been held due to low temperatures or strong currents.
