history

Public bathing was forbidden for women in Zurich until 1837. After the ban was lifted, the city set up a "bathhouse for women" on the Stadthausquai in the same year. Since there was no running water in many of Zurich's houses at the time, the women's pool was initially only intended for personal hygiene and not as a swimming pool . In 1888 the bathroom was renewed in the form it still exists today in the then modern Art Nouveau style. Since then, it has been a box-shaped wooden building complex that floats on the Limmat and is moored on the bank. The building is crowned by a dome and has four corner turrets. Since the end of the Second World War, there has also been a kiosk in the Frauenbad offering small dishes. In 1997, an evening bar was also permitted, to which men also have access. In addition, cultural events take place in the barefoot bar, and the women's pool can be rented for private events.
