Linda Christanty

Linda Christanty (born March 18, 1970 on the island of Bangka in the province of Bangka-Belitung ) is an Indonesian author and journalist.

Life

Linda Christanty grew up as the eldest daughter of liberal and western-oriented parents on the island of Bangka, east of Sumatra . The Muslim woman owes her Christian-sounding surname to her father's admiration for the world-class tennis player Chris Evert ; her first name is based on Lynda, the eldest daughter of former US President Lyndon B. Johnson . According to Christanty, political engagement was conveyed to Christanty as early as childhood by her grandfather, who was a union member and supporter of Indonesian President Sukarno, who was deposed in 1967 .

In the late 1980s, Christanty moved to the Indonesian capital Jakarta to study literature at the University of Indonesia . She began to publish her first short stories during her studies and at the age of 19 she received the prestigious short story award of the Indonesian daily Kompas for “Daun-Daun Kering” (Eng. “Dry leaves”) . After graduating in 1994, Christanty became increasingly involved in the labor movement and campaigned for the improvement of the living conditions of factory workers and the poor urban population. In the underground she acted as a co-founder of the Democratic People's Party (PRD), which was banned in 1996 by the authoritarian regime of President Suharto (1967-1998) due to its supposed communist ideologies .

After the fall of the dictatorial Suharto regime in 1998, Christanty gradually put back her political activism. Disappointed with the political development of the young democracy, in which the old elites were not held accountable and still wielded a lot of power, she decided to devote herself entirely to writing. She believed that she could achieve more as a writer and journalist than as an activist. In 2005 Christanty was commissioned by the Pantau Foundation for Journalism ( Yayasan Pantau ) to set up the independent Internet news portal Aceh Feature . She lived in Banda Aceh , the capital of Aceh Province , for a few years until she returned to Jakarta in 2012, where she worked as an editor for the women's magazine Dewi .

Christanty's literary oeuvre, which has received several national and international awards, includes fiction (especially poems and short stories) as well as essays and reports. Her works have been translated into Chinese, German, English, Japanese and Thai. Two of Christanty's early short stories, “Maria Pinto's flying horse” (“Kuda Terbang Maria Pinto”) and “The black hole” (“Lubang Hitam”) are included in the collection of short stories, Scent of Ashes (2008), translated by Monika Arnez and Edwin Wieringa German published. Seven years later, after all, writing did not imply that we are terrorists! (2015) a collection of essays and reports translated into German by Gunnar Stange, which was presented by the author during Indonesia's guest of honor at the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair .
