Line bearing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Line bearing

With a line bearing , a profile of the bottom of the water is generated along a specified line (segment line). In the past, an observation wire (wire with meter markings) was stretched for this purpose and the water depth was measured to the nearest decimetre at the marks with a dipstick ( striking device ). The principle is unchanged today, only the depth information is determined with an echo sounder instead of the bearing rod and the position is determined using GPS . Today the data is stored and processed by computer.
