The Linkbelt Oval is currently the only sports stadium in the island state of Nauru . It is located in Aiwo and was built by the Nauruan Phosphate Society. It is also called Aida Oval because Aida , one of the athletics clubs in Nauru, holds its competitions and trainings here.
Because of its obsolescence and large playing area, it generally does not meet international standards. The Linkbelt Oval is currently mainly used for Australian football games. Next to the stadium is the headquarters of the Nauru Australian Football Association (NAFA) , which organizes the national championship games. The stadium's visitor record is 3000 spectators, which was set up at the championship finals in 1999.
The Linkbelt Oval consists of a playing field and temporary small grandstands during important games. The square is named after a company that used to mine phosphate . In addition, the power plant team, the Menaida Tigers , was originally known as the "Linkbelt".
No grass grows in the square; the playing surface is made entirely of phosphate dust and dirt , making it difficult to play football games on such a surface. The NAFA motto is therefore "the hard men of football" - "The tough men of football". Nauruan football players take care of their wounds with sea water after playing. Foreign visiting teams mostly play with elbow and knee pads.
Despite the moon-like appearance of the pitch, there are full-size goals and a decent scoreboard. The game markings on the very light surface are marked with oil . The Linkbelt Oval is the home stadium for all teams in the Nauruan League. The Denig Stadium , another field in Denigomodu , is not suitable for football.
