The link popularity is a measure of the number and quality of links pointing to a website have. The more frequently a page is linked, the higher the link popularity of this page. Link popularity is used by search engines to evaluate websites in search engine rankings and therefore plays an important role in search engine optimization .

The link popularity is not well defined and does not designate a special calculation method. In the simplest case, link popularity is only measured based on the number of backlinks . Another simple way of calculating is to just count the number of backlinks from different domains or IP addresses . The PageRank is another special process to link popularity to determine. Here a numerical value is calculated for each document or each website. With PageRank, not only the number but also the quality of the backlinks is taken into account.

An inheritance of the link popularity on linked websites can be prevented with the nofollow instruction. The Disavow tool from Google also offers the option of devaluing links.

Link popularity is in contrast to click popularity , which uses only clicks made by the visitor for evaluation instead of the linked websites.
