Lino Barañao (born December 28, 1953 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine chemist and politician . He was the state's science minister from 2007 to 2018.

Life

Barañao was born in Buenos Aires and enrolled at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in 1973 , where he graduated with honors in chemistry in 1976 . In 1980 he received his doctorate in biochemistry and in 1981 he was appointed professor . He then received scholarships at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich and at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University . From 1984 to 1994 he did research for the Argentine CONICET with a focus on reproductive biology . In 1987 he received the Bernardo Houssay Prize . From 1995 to 1996 he was President of the Argentine Biological Society.

From 2007 to 2018 he was Minister of Science of Argentina . In September 2018, the Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Productiva was dissolved and added to the new Ministerio de Educación, Cultura, Ciencia y Tecnología under Alejandro Finocchiaro .
