A lip augmentation is an operation that is usually carried out as part of a cosmetic operation. Various methods are used to achieve a more beautiful shape and a larger volume. With a few exceptions (e.g. a cleft lip and palate caused by diseases, developmental disorders or another cause), the shape of the lips is genetically predetermined.

history

Lip augmentation around 1913

The ideal of beauty in physical attributes has changed over the centuries. The so-called child scheme, however, does not go out of style. Behavioral research shows that a certain guy with a big head, round eyes, a short nose and full, plump lips is particularly popular. A symmetrical kissable mouth looks attractive, but not everyone is blessed with it.

Big lips were already considered an ideal of beauty among the indigenous peoples of Africa and South America. These were modified by simple mechanical aids, e.g. made of wood or ceramics , right down to the plate lips .

Lip enlargement through exogenous materials

Correction of the lips is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed. Not every procedure brings the desired success in the long term. With an implant, on the other hand, the padding continues. The use of exogenous substances that are well accepted is important. In the past, the synthetic material Gore-Tex or fine silicone threads have proven their worth. This method is used by plastic surgeons. Two small incisions are required at the corners of the mouth, the plastic threads are placed on the edges of the lips. Implants offer several advantages over other procedures. On the one hand, silicone inserts are available in different sizes and designs. In addition, the implants can be removed again if the procedure does not achieve the desired effect.

Lip enlargement by injection

Hyaluronic acid , a substance that occurs naturally in the body , is often used to spray the lips . It is a sugar derivative and can be found in connective tissue, among other things. Hyaluronic acid binds liquid and is therefore often used for injecting wrinkles. Since the substance can be produced by the body itself, it is usually well tolerated. In addition, it is easy to shape and can be easily distributed by a specialist during the injection. However, there is one disadvantage when injecting hyaluronic acid: it is broken down by the body within 12 months. For this reason, regular follow-up treatment is necessary to permanently enlarge the lips.

Lip enlargement through the body's own substances

With any implant there is a risk of rejection by the body. To avoid this disadvantage, cosmetic surgeons are constantly developing new methods. One of them is the injection of the body's own substances. In the past few years, fat injection has proven its worth. Fat is sucked from another part of the body (usually on the stomach , buttocks or thighs ) and injected into the lips under sterile conditions. These are relatively small amounts of 2 to 5 milliliters . Another option is to transplant the middle layer of the skin ( dermis ) to plump up the lips. However, this is not a routine intervention. The skin has to be removed from another part of the body and permanent scarring can be expected. After the treatment with autologous fat, one should never put pressure on the treated areas. Physical exertion should be avoided in the first few days after the procedure, as well as direct sunlight .

Lip augmentation through surgical measures

The plastic surgery allows various methods to change by a lip augmentation the entire facial area. Surgical enlargement of the lips is neither an implant nor an injection. Rather, the red lips are enlarged so that the mouth appears fuller and larger. A strip of skin is removed from the edge of the lip and the red lip is pulled up and turned outwards. Then it is sewn cleanly. This technique requires a great deal of specialist knowledge and experience in correctly setting the cuts and sewing. The advantage of this method is that no foreign substances such as implants or the body's own substances such as fatty tissue are used. After the scars have healed, the lips look very natural.
