Lirung (* 1982 ; † 1987 ) was an English thoroughbred horse that was bred from Liranga at the Fährhof stud farm in Connaught.

For a long time Lirung was the favorite of the Blue Ribbon ( German Derby ) from 1985 in front of his stable mate Acatenango . This was only the second stable color until 1985 and was therefore ridden in the derby by Andrzej Tylicki , whereas Lirung was the first choice of the stable jockey Georg Bocskai .

However, as the standing distance of 2,400 m in the 1985 Hamburg Gallop Derby was too long for Lirung, he collapsed from the top on the home straight after a long pace run. He was only able to defend third place because of his class, after he had to give up second place to his third stable mate Pontiac.

Lirung was one of the few reactors of German breeding, who belonged to the European top class. In memory of the great actor Curd Jürgens, it was also called the Norman wardrobe in France .

1987 was to be his big year on the European stage. Its owner, Walter Jacobs, had a preparatory race specially announced in Bremen, which Lirung had won by superiority. After that he would start in a major mile race in Italy. Because of a strike by the customs officers, he had a long stay at the Italian border and contracted an infection. After returning he was immediately taken to a clinic, but had to be given up a little later.

Lirung won 12 times in a total of 17 starts. In no race did he come in worse than 3rd place.
