The historic breakwater is located on the southwest flank of the island between the west head and the harbor. The approximately 300 meter long wooden structure is part of a coastal defense system that spanned and secured the entire western head of the island between 1883 and 1889. The system consists of supported piles and square timbers, which serve as breakwaters during storm surges. Systems of this type were also used on the other East Frisian islands, but this construction principle has not proven itself. The west head of Baltrums was therefore replaced between 1921 and 1928 by a solid concrete structure with an S-shaped cross-section (similar to that on Norderney ). Only in the not so endangered beach section between Westkopf and Hafen the original wooden construction was preserved. Completely renewed in 1930/1931. As part of extensive renovation work on the revetment of the west head, the existing pile protection structure was repaired again in 2008. between 1883 and 1889 April 19, 1979 452002.00024
