General
Fümmelse is three kilometers west of downtown Wolfenbüttel. Fümmelse was mentioned as Vimmelse as early as 1159 . In the 13th century the place was also called Vimmelhusen or Vemelhusen . The place arose from two settlement cores, it was a double settlement. The eastern core of the settlement was around Dorfstrasse 5, the western one around Untere Dorfstrasse 45. In the 14th century, a third settlement core was added around Fümmelser Strasse 36.
In the 15th century the properties were rearranged, resulting in a clustered village. This has been roughly preserved to this day. In 1857 the south-western part of the village burned down.
