List of the bishops of Erfurt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A first diocese of Erfurt had existed from 742 to 755 and was founded by St. Boniface . However, it came to the diocese of Mainz as early as 755 , where it remained until 1821. Thuringia then mainly belonged to the Archdiocese of Paderborn , from 1929 to the dioceses of Fulda and Würzburg .

The Episcopal Office Erfurt-Meiningen , founded in 1973 for the parts of these dioceses in the GDR, was elevated to the Diocese of Erfurt by Pope John Paul II on July 8, 1994. The State Church Treaty between the Holy See and the Free State of Thuringia was signed in 1997.
