The honorary citizenship is the highest award of the Hessian town of Borken . It has been awarded since 1971. So far, eight people have been honored in this way.

The honorary citizens of the city of Borken

  1. Kurt Wolff (†)
    Awarded on July 1, 1971
    The first honorary citizen of the city of Borken (Hesse) became Kurt Wolff, a German who lived in the French partner municipality of Méru . In 1962 he made contact with the city of Borken via the district administrator. He was the initiator of the Franco-German partnership, which was sealed in 1964.
  2. Alfred Möller (†)
    Awarded on April 28, 1993
    The trained toolmaker, locksmith and boiler foreman worked at the Borken brown coal power station until his retirement . He was honored for his voluntary commitment and his many years of activity as the First City Councilor and in various organs of local self-government at city and district level.
  3. Kurt Keßler (†)
    Awarded on September 25, 1996
    The independent farmer received honorary citizenship for his musical life's work. His extraordinary merits, which he has earned in decades of active work as a volunteer for the care, promotion and preservation of the local cultural heritage and choral singing, were honored.
  4. Roswitha Schmidt-Weigand
    Awarded on December 11, 1998
    The retired secondary school teacher and mother of three sons were granted honorary citizenship in recognition of their voluntary work for the common good. She worked in Borken for many years as a city councilor and member of the district council.
  5. Karl Schaub (†)
    Awarded on November 6, 2004
    The former power plant foreman received the award for his many years of local political and social commitment, his voluntary work in the field of mobile nursing stations and as an elderly insured person as well as the outstanding work in setting up the Hessian lignite mining museum and on the board of the foundation.
  6. Gerhard Möller
    Awarded on January 11, 2008
    The trained businessman received the award for his extraordinary merits, which he did in decades of active volunteer work for the care, promotion and preservation of the local cultural heritage, especially through church and popular brass music, for the benefit of the city of Borken and its citizens has acquired.

  8. Stefan Skasa-White
    Awarded on January 16, 2015
    Ms. Annette Antignac and Mr. Stefan Skasa-Weiß from Méru (France) were granted honorary citizenship rights as part of the town twinning of Borken-Mèru due to their worthy work over decades.
