description

Conceived as an “underground and underground experience”, a visit to the museum conveys interesting facts about coal and energy . The underground and surface extraction of lignite , its use and the handling of the post-mining landscape are the focus of the museum presentations.

Numerous exhibits and original equipment from mining and power generation can be viewed, many of which will be demonstrated in demonstration mode.

The museum has a total of four exhibition areas:

For children between the ages of 6 and 14, specially designed “playful experience areas” and experimental workshops are available, in which they can go on a journey of discovery through the history of coal and energy in an age-appropriate and experience-oriented manner.

Museum entrance

The mining history exhibition area in the city center of Borken provides an overview of the 400-year history of Hessian lignite mining and shows the development of the coalfields, the use of lignite as a factor in industrialization and the social situation of the miners . Since the spring of 2006, children and schoolchildren aged 6–12 have been able to playfully discover the working world underground in a “children's mine”.

Visitor gallery

The reconstructed tunnel in the mining history exhibition area leads visitors into the underground world of coal extraction. What in mining, gezähe , tunneling machines, blasting underground, Steiger parlors and "buddy catcher" are is explained. Many devices are also demonstrated in the visitor tunnel so that visitors can get an impression of the working conditions underground and of the life of the miners.

Coal and energy theme park

On the 3.5 hectare theme park area on the edge of Borken, mining equipment, mining locomotives and power plant turbines illustrate how lignite was extracted in open-cast mining and used to generate electricity. Drilling rigs, bucket-wheel and bucket-chain excavators as well as power plant boilers and turbines will be demonstrated "in action". Historical film sequences give an impression of previous mining activities. On Sundays or on request there is the opportunity to take a tour with the visitor's train. The museum café offers food and drinks.

Nature Conservation Information Center Borkener See

The nature conservation information center in the “Coal and Energy” theme park takes up the topics of post-mining landscape and recultivation and uses interactive media, animals and plants to show how “second-hand landscapes” are created from former opencast mines. The focus of the exhibition is on Lake Borken and the nature reserve of the same name, which have their origins in what was once the largest open-cast coal mine in the Borken district and are now a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers.

The Borkener Seenland is for recreation. The natural bathing lake Stockelache offers bathing, swimming and water sports. The Singliser See is a surfing paradise in North Hesse, and the Borkener See is embedded in a nature reserve that invites you to hike and observe nature.

Brown coal trail

The 32 kilometer long brown coal circular route leads into the middle of the post-mining landscape and connects the museum locations and the Borken Lake District with 20 former production sites of the Borken Revier. The traces of decaying industrial culture can be traced on it by bike or on foot - past heaps, open-cast mining holes, newly created lakes and recultivated areas.

Museum Street

The “Coal & Energy” theme park and the visitor gallery are connected by Museum Street, where seven sculptures and three technical monuments artistically interpret the themes of coal, energy and the mining consequences.

Stolzenbach memorial

Stolzenbach memorial

On June 1, 1988, a serious mine accident occurred in the Stolzenbach mine , in which 51 miners were killed. A memorial for all miners who died while working in the Borken mining area was set up on the former company premises.

Mineralogical Collection Marianne Schrammel

This special exhibition area is housed in the rooms of the mining archive and is dedicated to mineralogy and geological history.
