The honorary citizenship is the highest honor that the city Lauf awarded to. The legal basis is the respectively valid municipal code. Honorary citizenship is an ideal award without any material benefits. In addition, the city awards a golden citizen medal.

The following people were made honorary citizens. Three further honorary citizenships were revoked in 1945 for active support of the Nazi regime.

  1. August Barth (* 1869; † 1918)
    Merchant
    Barth was granted honorary citizenship in 1917 in recognition of his services as a long-term chairman of the town council.
  2. Gottlieb Eckert (* 1845; † 1920)
    mayor
    Eckert was mayor of the city from 1895 to 1919. In recognition of his services, he was made an honorary citizen in 1919.
  3. Daniel Schönleben (* 1860; † 1945)
    Senior teacher
    With the award of honorary citizenship, the city paid tribute to his services to the development and expansion of the historic Kunigunden Festival.
  4. Otto Weigmann (* 1873; † 1940)
    Art historian, director of the State Collection of Graphics in Munich
    Awarded on May 30, 1937
    Weigmann was given honorary citizenship in recognition of his loyalty to his home country, expressed graphically, and his sense of self-sacrifice by donating his 400-sheet Norimbergensia collection.
  5. Hans Kohl (* 1875; † 1959)
    City Administrator
    Awarded on January 24, 1949
    The award was made in recognition of his achievements and merits as an administrative officer of the city.
  6. Karlfritz Petersen (* 1903; † 1967)
    Factory director
    Awarded on January 23, 1962
    Petersen was a member of the management board of Steatit-Magnesia AG, a leading ceramic industrial company, based in Lauf. With his appointment as an honorary citizen, his services to the social issues of the city were recognized.
  7. Karl-Ludwig Völker (* 1893; † 1976)
    Practical doctor
    Awarded on April 14, 1973
    Völker was awarded honorary citizenship in recognition of his services to the needy people in Lauf ad Pegnitz and on behalf of a medical profession who selflessly dedicate themselves to the residents.
  8. Rüdiger Pompl (* 1944)
    mayor
    Awarded on June 24, 2015
    Pompl was mayor of the city from 1979 to 2008. He was awarded honorary citizenship for his extraordinary commitment to local politics. Pompl was also awarded the Bavarian Constitutional Medal and has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
