List of air raid shelters in Bochum and Wattenscheid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of air raid shelters in Bochum and Wattenscheid documents existing and lost systems.

history

The first bunker systems were built as early as 1928, especially from 1933 at the Bochumer Verein .

The systematic construction of air raid shelters began after October 10, 1940, following a special Hitler decree. In particular, raised bunkers and deep bunkers, air raid tunnels and air raid shelters were built. The heavy, area-wide bombing raids began in May 1943. The heaviest bombing raid in the history of the city of Bochum during the war took place on November 4, 1944, when 10,000 high-explosive bombs and over 130,000 incendiary bombs hit the city within an hour. 1,300 people died as a result of this bombing night. A total of 550,000 bombs fell on Bochum, killing over 4,000 people. Under this pressure, individual production areas of the armaments industry had also been laid underground. Today these bunkers can hardly be demolished due to their solid construction.

During the Cold War , various public buildings in Bochum were equipped to protect part of the population from NBC weapons. Examples are the new Bochum town hall , several parking garages in the city center from the 1990s and a cellar in the NA building of the Ruhr University Bochum from the 1960s. Here, too, protection would only be available for a small part of the Bochum population in the event of a war.
