This list of 12 number one hits in the British charts of the year 1954 . They were the front runners in the weekly Top 20 of the British music magazine New Musical Express . With the chart edition of October 1, 1954, the NME began to publish a top 25 hit parade instead of the top 20 .

The BBC found Johnnie Ray's breathing sounds too suggestive and telling, and so refused to play the single. Which did not detract from the success. Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters thus had a number 2 hit on the R&B charts in the USA . In the US pop charts, Johnnie Ray's version only came in at number 19, in England it was his first top position after 3 top 10 hits.
