List of Viceroys of Brazil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of viceroys of Brazil includes a total of 15 incumbents in the period from 1640 to 1808. However, the title Viceroy of Brazil was awarded between 1640 and 1718 only to three Portuguese dignitaries who held the office of governor general of the Portuguese crown colony of Brazil. Since 1720, the title of viceroy has permanently replaced that of the governor general. The viceroy's official residence was in Salvador da Bahia until 1763 when it was moved to Rio de Janeiro .
With the arrival of the Portuguese royal court in Rio de Janeiro in 1808, who had fled
Lisbon from Napoleon's army in 1807 , the office of Viceroy of Brazil was no longer occupied. In his place came the Portuguese Prince Regent João .
