In the list of water protection areas in Berlin , the legally established water protection areas (WSG) in Berlin are listed. In total, 13 water protection areas in Berlin on an area of around 212 km² are designated by water protection area ordinances, divided into three protection zones, each with different protection provisions. In relation to the total city area of around 890 km², around a quarter of the city area is designated as water protection areas.

history

Berlin's drinking water comes from inner-city groundwater that has formed in deep layers that are more than 10,000 years old. In order to protect this water supply, water protection areas were established in the vicinity of the groundwater extraction systems. Around 650 deep wells - which reach between 30 and 140 meters deep - convey the groundwater to the Berlin waterworks.

In the past, individual water protection areas were merged:

  • The water protection areas for the Johannisthal and Altglienicke waterworks have been combined to form the Johannisthal / Altglienicke WSG.
  • The water protection areas for the Wuhlheide and Kaulsdorf waterworks have been combined to form the Wuhlheide / Kaulsdorf WSG.

The following water protection area ordinances (WVO) have been repealed:

  • WSG Altglienicke, repealed by ordinance of April 6, 2009; today part of the WSG Johannisthal / Altglienicke.
  • WSG book, with WVO of August 31, 1999, repealed by ordinance of April 6, 2009.
  • WSG Jungfernheide, with WVO August 31, 1995, repealed by regulation of April 6, 2009.

Remarks

  1. a b c d e f The Staaken, Eichwalde and Erkner waterworks are located in the state of Brandenburg and are not operated by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe. Corresponding to the water catchment areas for the extraction of groundwater for drinking water purposes, the water protection areas here cross borders. The Berlin ordinances for these waterworks serve to protect the parts of the cross-border water protection area zones located in Berlin.
