Historic village center

The historic village center of Branzoll is located at the southern entrance to Reichsstraße, around St.-Leonhard-Platz. The square rises slightly to the east, where it is completed by the most important noble building in the village, the Palais Bossi-Fedrigotti. In the opposite direction, the view goes undisturbed into the wide landscape, shaped by the mighty porphyry rocks of the Mittelberg. The current design of the square with porphyry cube paving and a new limestone fountain goes back to the 1990s. The facades of the surrounding buildings, apart from house number 9, are in a good state of preservation. In the Alten-Kirchenstraße, however, there are some half-abandoned buildings in need of renovation.

Village center

The village center is usually determined by the location of the centers of the spiritual (the church) and civil (the town hall) life of the villagers and in most cases can be identified with the historic village center. But not in Branzoll: here the village center has shifted, at least since the construction of the Brenner Railway, around the old inn "Goldenes Kreuz" at the intersection of Bahnhofstrasse and Reichstrasse. At this point the new parish church and later the modern town hall were built. Bahnhofstrasse forms an important visual axis: through the bottleneck between the “Golden Cross” and the Renaissance building of the house at Reichsstrasse No. 55, the view is symbolically directed directly to the church tower.

House "Black Eagle"

After the historic village center around St.-Leonhard-Platz and the village center around the Golden Cross, this ensemble forms the third historical settlement along Reichsstraße. It has developed around the historic “Schwarzer Adler” inn, at an important traffic junction at the intersection of Reichstrasse with the old route through which the Aldeiner Holz was transported to the embarkation port. Due to the newer street design with porphyry cube paving and new sidewalk, the almost square-like character of this street intersection has been significantly reinforced. Towards the north there is a very interesting building complex consisting of interconnected courtyards, passageways and picturesque views. It is bounded by the water wall that once protected this part of the village from the floods of the Aldeiner Bach.

Thomsen

Flanked by tall trees, Schwarz-Adler-Strasse climbs east to Von-Ferrari-Platz and continues as Aldeiner Strasse after the intersection with Staatsstrasse. All of the buildings and properties here, as well as the park, once belonged to the Von Ferrari-Thomsen family, a family that closely linked its name to the history of Branzoll, especially in the 19th century. Despite the diversity of owners and purposes today, this zone has retained a uniform character that is different from other parts of the village, and it is important to protect it today.

Etschhafen

The transport of goods across the Adige largely determined Branzoll's economy until the second half of the 19th century. The objects shown, such as the small open-air museum at the old harbor, are still reminiscent of this past activity.

Quarries

From the construction of the Brennerbahn up to the 1970s, the extraction of porphyry stone from Göllerberg was an important economic factor for Branzoll. The impressive porphyry walls, the abandoned tools and the simple dwellings of the workers are still a reminder of this activity that has disappeared from the municipality of Branzoll.
