LISTSERV is an application program for managing mailing lists , which was originally developed in the mid- 1980s for the US computer network BITNET . LISTSERV was developed by Eric Thomas in 1986 and was the very first software for mailing list management.

LISTSERV originally ran on IBM - mainframe computers under the operating system VM (Virtual Machine) and used IBM-specific communication protocols such RSCS (Remote Spooling Communications Subsystem). However, it was ported to other operating system platforms and made suitable for use on the Internet by using the TCP / IP communication protocols .

LISTSERV is now a registered trademark of L-Soft, which has been developing and selling this software package with additional software solutions since 1994.

More than 400,000 mailing lists are currently managed with LISTSERV. Of these, more than 14% are public.
