Little America (Antarctica)
Little America I to V were existing US stations on the Ross Ice Shelf in the Antarctic Ross Sea from 1928 to 1958 . The first station was built as part of the first Antarctic expedition (1928-1930) of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Others emerged during Byrd's second expedition (1933–1935), as the west base of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941), during Operation Highjump (1946–1947) and during the first Operation Deep Freeze (1955–1956). The research bases are namesake for the Little America Basin , a lake basin not far from the Bay of Whales .
