The Little Grand Lake Provisional Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 2002.
location
The 729 km² reserve is located in the west of Newfoundland. It extends south of Grand Lake along the course of the Lewaseechjeech Brook and includes the eponymous Little Grand Lake . The Provisional Ecological Reserve borders two other protected areas: the Little Grand Lake Wildlife Reserve (569 km²) and the Glover Island Public Reserve (178 km²).
fauna
The Provisional Ecological Reserve was set up to protect the spruce marten subspecies Martes americana atrata . This is one of only 13 native land mammal species on the island. The population on Newfoundland consists of about 300 animals. The largest remaining population of these animals occurs in the park area. The typical habitat of the spruce marten is formed by densely forested areas, as they still occur in the protected area, but are disappearing piece by piece on Newfoundland.
The temporary reserve also serves to preserve the habitat of the Canadian forest reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus caribou ). This haunts the moor and marshland of the Buchan's Plateau-Topsail region.
