Little Ross is a twelve hectare island off the south coast of Scotland , off the coast of Borgue in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . There is a lighthouse on the island . The island, about 2.2 km from the mainland, can only be reached by boat or helicopter.

history

The lighthouse was built by Alan Stevenson in 1843 to bridge the gap between neighboring lighthouses on the Mull of Galloway and in Southerness . The lighthouse is a good 20 m (66 feet) high. In the 20th century the island was inhabited by two lighthouse keepers and their families.

In August 1960, employees of the royal sea rescue organization RNLI found the lifeless body of lighthouse keeper Hugh Clark, who had been murdered by his colleague Robert Dickson. Dickson was arrested after a nationwide chase and sentenced to life in prison.

In 1961 the lighthouse operation was automated. The electricity required is generated by solar cells and a small wind turbine .

In July 2017, the island went up for sale for £ 325,000  ; the price is roughly equivalent to a two-room apartment in Edinburgh , but would not be enough in London . The offer includes a small six-bedroom country house and three ramshackle barns, but not the lighthouse, which is still in operation.
