Southerness is a small town in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located around 20 km south of Dumfries and around 28 km west of Kirkcudbright at Cape Southerness Point on the Solway Firth .
history
Numerous Stone Age flint artifacts have been found northeast of Southerness . They are in the collection of the Dumfries Museum . In the 12th century, Vikings settled in what is now Southerness, which at the time was known as Salterness . The monks then continued the salt extraction they had established there.
As early as 1749, the Southerness Lighthouse was a beacon at Southerness Point. This makes it the third oldest beacon in Scotland. The early construction period shows the high importance of the lighthouse in terms of traffic engineering, at the entrance to the estuary of the Nith and thus to the then important port of Dumfries . The trader Richard Oswald laid the foundation stone of today's Southerness in the later 18th century in the hope of discovering minable coal deposits in the area. In the 20th century, the small town was developed for tourism. Caravan parks were created, which today exceed the area of the village many times over. In 1947 the village received a golf course.
traffic
Located in a sparsely populated region on the banks of the Solway Firth, Southerness is only connected to the road network via a side road. It ends around four meters north on the A710 (Dumfries - Dalbeattie ).
